A special course created by Marielle Gomez, founder of the club. This course has been carefully put together with the best tips and ideas that Marielle has learned during her own raising processes. It's designed so that you can follow along and raise your Monarchs at the same time as the lessons. In this course, you'll learn everything you need to know about how to raise Monarchs. From creating an outdoor setup to making sure the Monarchs develop into migratory butterflies; how to identify milkweed and Monarch eggs, to how to care for caterpillars and release adult butterflies. This course also goes over problems you may face along the way, and how to prevent or fix these issues.
Course Overview:
- Introduction: Preparation/Setup - This lesson talks about the Monarch Migration, and how people can TRULY help Monarchs, as raising them isn't the best way that will actually save them. Also in this lesson, you will learn why outdoor rearing is safer than indoors which came from a discussion that arose after a new study came out suggesting that indoor reared Monarchs might not migrate. The lesson also talks about the materials needed for raising Monarchs, the outdoor rearing setup, and the commitment necessary for raising Monarchs.
- Eggs: Collection/Preparation - In this lesson, we explain how to identify milkweed, and how to spot a Monarch egg in the wild. It also talks about when is the best time to look for eggs (in NM), how to prepare eggs for hatching, and how to collect and disinfect milkweed leaves for caterpillar care.
- Caterpillar Care - This lesson teaches you how to care for caterpillars for the next few weeks. The lesson talks about how to keep milkweed fresh, and how to clean up after caterpillars, as well as about instars and infections.
- Pupation/Chrysalis - This lesson explains all about the Monarch chrysalis, what pupation is, and how the Monarch prepares for pupation. It also talks about how to relocate chrysalides if needed, and how long metamorphosis will occur.
- Releasing Adult Butterflies - And finally, we've reached the awaited end. This lesson explains all about what happens when the Monarch ecloses from the chrysalis, how to feed and tag the Monarch, and send it off on it's long migration journey!
